9th Annual World Laughter Day Celebration

Our 9th Annual World Laughter Day 2015 is almost here!

Led by certified Laughter Yoga instructor and trainer Sheila Horowitz, this year’s all-day celebration will be Sunday, May 3, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and include everything from Laughter Yoga sessions to an attempt at setting a Guinness World Record for the largest human labyrinth to a Laughter Bus for event transportation.

World Laughter Day was introduced by Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga Movement, which now boasts more than 12,000 clubs around the world.

World Laughter Day was first celebrated in January 1998 in Mumbai, India.

The therapeutic properties of laughter are well known, said Horowitz, of Irvine, who has led weekly Laughter Yoga sessions there for the past 10 years.

“Laughter is the perfect remedy with all the ingredients for a healthy life,” she said. “Laughter can change your mental state and boost your energy. Plus, it just feels great to laugh.”

Laughter Yoga is interactive. While not including specific yoga poses, it incorporates yogic breathing that results in deep, rhythmic breaths. It’s based on the concept that the body doesn’t differentiate between stimulated and real laughter — physiologically and psychologically, the benefits are the same. Participants move about with childlike playfulness and pantomime, and do laughter exercises.

The 9th Annual World Laughter Day includes an optional Laughter Bus (cost per person $50) that will ferry participants to all events from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Events can also be joined separately. They include a potluck dinner, Laughter Yoga session, dinner at the Champagne French Bakery Café and a funny movie.
